First application in 1959. Customs union with the EU in 1996 – making Turkey the first ever accession country to have full customs union prior
to negotiations.
Official candidate status in 1999.
Green light given on 17 December 2004 to start accession talks with the EU on 3 October 2005.
The actual convergence date is likely to be many years ahead, but benefits of accession expected to start to accrue in the first few years
of negotiations.
